Pint-sized kittens with extra toes are determined to thrive after being brought back from the brink

A tiny kitten with extra toes was determined to thrive after a rough start in life.

Stella, a polydactylus, was a little fighter from the start. She was born to a rescued cat through an emergency caesarean section and was the only survivor of her six-year-old litter. Her mother was unable to breastfeed, so Caroline Grace, a bottle-kitten carer for Saving One Life (a voluntary cat rescue), took her in and began feeding around the clock.

Even though the kitten was so tiny and frail, it held on with all its might and developed a high fever after days of antibiotics and oxygen treatments.

“This girl really was a miracle worker baby. She had a difficult entry into this world. As a cesarean baby, born from a sick and stressed mother, could neither breastfeed nor get colostrum, she had every chance against her,” said Caroline with Love Meow.

There were several times that Caroline didn’t know if she would make it, but the little warrior Kitty never stopped fighting. After a week of tube feeding and careful grooming, Stella began to recover.

By eight days she could suck up a whole 5 ml syringe of formula herself. “She is a fighter baby with a fiery spirit and a sweet soul.”

Stella is equipped with thumbs and additional digits on her paws. “She has an extra toe on each forefoot (which looks like a thumb) and two extra toes on each rear foot,” Caroline told Love Meow.

Little polydactyly had the sweetest habit of sucking on her “thumb” when trying to groom her mittens.

For the next few weeks, Caroline fed Stella around the clock every two hours. “Most kittens this age can pass four hours between feedings. I didn’t mind giving her extra love and support to keep her healthy and strong.”

Stella got a healthy, round stomach, which she proudly displayed by rolling onto her back and swinging her paws in the air. She was a little shorter than she should be for her age, but nothing could stop the cute tabby.

“The first moment I could really breathe out and know she was going to be fine was when she was weaned after five weeks. She suddenly became an insatiable eater and gained more weight,” Caroline told Love Meow.

“Her eyes didn’t open until she was 13 days old and weren’t fully open until she was 15 days old. She’s just a late bloomer who takes her time.”

As soon as Stella figured out her leg muscles, she took her first steps in front of her nest.

The kitten’s personality was revealed when she started using the litter box, playing with toys, and climbing where she could put her paws on.

“When she wasn’t playing or eating, she was a total cuddle and always wanted to be with us. She went from my fragile little bottle baby to a strong and playful kitten.”

She used her newfound strength to hop, jump, climb, and hunt invisible bugs around her room. Her energy level rose and no toy could escape the keen eyes of little Stella.

After a big meal, the cute polydactyl curled up in her foster mother’s arms and just wanted to be loved.

“Stella’s personality was so cute and attention-grabbing. She loved being held and cuddled on my shoulder,” shared Caroline Love Meow.

“She was also super brave and curious, and loved exploring new toys, places and people. She had a quirky personality that made everyone laugh and the slightest voice when she meowed or purred.”

After 10 weeks of care, little Stella blossomed into a happy, wild cat. She closed her nursing home a few days ago and was neutered and adopted by a wonderful family.

“Stella had a difficult start in life, struggling through illness, eating disorders, and developmental delays to become the strong, healthy, cute, goofy, and independent girl she is today,” said Caroline.

“I’m incredibly proud of her and grateful for everything she taught me.”

“It was definitely the hardest goodbye I’ve had to say, but it made me so happy to see her new mother forever so excited and in love with Stella. I know they have an amazingly long life of joy and love becomes.”
