Fires are terrifying to everyone, but they are worst to our furry friends. While we may know what’s going on and where to run during a fire, our dogs don’t. All they feel is fear and confusion, which could make it difficult for them to escape on their own. When a fire started in a house in Florida while Amber the dog was home alone, she panicked. She had no idea how to escape the smoke.
But luckily a friendly policeman heard the puppy inside. He did the only thing he could to release the four-legged family member. He risked his life to save the dog. What a hero!

A dog caught in the flames
Steven and Autumn Konen were running errands when their house caught fire. It is unclear how the fire started, but luckily there were no people in the house when it happened. But there was another important family member. The Konen family dog was home alone when the Florida house went up in flames. Poor Amber had no way of calling for help.
The Palm Coast Fire Department and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Deputy Jeckovich from the police was the first to notice the dog trapped in it. He heard scratches on the other side of the door and hurried to figure out what to do.
His bodycam recordings show him running to other officers and firefighters to draw their attention to the dog. He asks her if he can open the door. Someone informed him that smashing the glass on the door was the only way to save the dog in time.

So Jeckovich ran to the door without hesitation and started smashing it with a gun. As soon as most of the glass had fallen, he whistled and asked the dog to come. Nothing happened at first, but smoke was pouring out the door quickly. The smoke made the officer cough so hard that he had to step back. Fortunately, when Jeckovich recovered, Amber ran out of the opening. He saved the dog from a difficult situation!
House demolished, but dog safe!
When the medium-sized dog ran out the door in the rescue kit, it appeared to be a light gray color. Amber is usually white, so the smoke had made her fur appear darker. When the Konens returned home, they were devastated to see that their home was no longer. Still, they were overjoyed to find out that their canine companion had survived.
“While the dog was a little shaken, there were no serious injuries. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire but were relieved to be reunited with tHeritage pet when they got to the scene, ”wrote the Flagler County sheriff’s office.

It was later revealed that the family’s cat named Boot was also inside during the fire. They said he survived but is now lost. If you live near Flagler County, Florida, be on the lookout for a black and white cat.
Aside from their health and life, the family lost almost everything that day. So if you want to help them get back on their feet, consider donating to GoFundMe. Nobody should have to go through this, especially not a confused and scared dog like Amber.
