You can teach an old dog new tricks, and that goes for cats too! Shelter cats are often overlooked because they are shy, fearful, and reserved. But all they need is someone to take a chance and show them some love. That’s why Greater Good Charities, iHeartCats, and Jackson Galaxy from Animal Planet have teamed up to celebrate National High-Five Day.
In an annual High Five Day competition, participants help animal shelter cats learn new tricks such as high fives and at the same time raise money for animals in need. And to add to this amazing cause, iHeartCats donated toys to bring even more adoptable cats to life!
What is the Cat Pawsitive National High-Five Day Contest?
2021 marked the third year of the National High Five Day competition, which is part of the Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Initiative. Cat Pawsitive is a program that trains animal shelter cats to appear “more adaptable”. As it turns out, teaching cats how to give high fives isn’t rocket science. Plus, this adorable trick will help them get adopted faster.
For the competition, cat parents are encouraged to work on their own cats’ high five skills. Cats who have passed the high five are invited to compete for the most creative high five. And some of the results are just too cute!
Each year the judges select the 25 best high five videos for cats. Then the audience votes for the three best. Each of the grand prize winners can donate thousands of dollars to the animal organization of their choice. And it looks like 2021 was an incredibly successful and heartwarming competition.
Encouraging animal shelter cats with donated toys
iHeartCats stepped up to make this uplifting event even cuter. By donating our toys, we helped these cats to appear even more “adaptable” to visitors to the animal shelters. Our toys have helped get many shelter cats out of their shells.
High fives are just one way to help cats become more social. Playtime, cuddling, and patience will all help a furry friend warm up in their new home. All cats are able to make great companions as long as people give them a chance. The next time you want to adopt a cat, don’t forget to hang out with those who are also more shy and fearful.
High Five Day 2021 not only helped cats get adopted, but brought joy to cats across the country. Congratulations to the three winners of 2021: Matilda, Birdie & Finch and Joan. And if your cat is looking for new, exciting toys, check out the iHeartCats shop too!
