The German Shepherd is a consistent runner-up in the American Kennel Club’s annual poll of the most popular breeds, and carries the title of top dog in the heart of anyone who has ever been lucky enough to have one in their life. In fact, the breed is so popular among admirers that they even have their own pet vacation – German Shepherd Daycelebrated on May 10th every year!

Interesting facts about German Shepherds

The touching Red Foley tune “Old Shep” was inspired by the legendary childhood dog buddy of the Country Country Crooners, a German Shepherd named Hoover.

Contributing to the defense of endangered wildlife in Africa, Arrow became the first anti-poaching skydiver to earn him a place in the Guinness Book of Records in 2016!

Morris and Buddy

Upon completion of the training program, Mr. Frank and Buddy returned to America and opened their eyes to the world to the limitless opportunities open to sightless people as they crossed a crowded New York City street together in the presence of reporters. Morris Frank co-founded The Seeing Eye in 1929. Today, dog lovers can read about the special connection between Mr. Frank and Buddy in a book co-authored by their human, First Lady of the Seeing Eye, in the children’s books Dog Diaries # 2: Buddy and Morris and Buddy: The Story of the first seeing guide dog. Tourists in the town of Morristown, New Jersey can also visit a statue of Morris Frank and the dog who gave him the gift of self-reliance.
