A tiny cleft lip kitten found the perfect friend after being saved from life on the street.
A good Samaritan from California discovered a small tabby outside with no mother or siblings. With the help of local rescuers, the kitten was safely transported to Ashley Kelley, a volunteer caregiver from Wrenn Rescues (a Los Angeles volunteer rescue company).
The kitten named Jürgen was born with a cleft lip and the cutest meow. For the first two weeks of his life, he struggled with severe pneumonia and other health problems. He was so small, but held on with incredible determination.
There were moments when Ashley wasn’t sure the kitten would make it, but she kept fighting next to the tabby, taking a day off at a time. With antibiotics, nebulization treatments, and oxygen, things started to improve.
Aela, another caregiver who also has a cleft lip, came in to encourage the little buddy and do a quick sniff.
“Oxygen made a big, immediate difference to him. His color improved, his voice was back, and he writhed at feed time,” shared Ashley Love Meow.
As he got stronger, he was really looking forward to breakfast, purring, and making loads of cookies in his comfortable incubator. “I was so proud of him and kept telling him all the wonderful things he had in front of him.”
Jürgen really enjoyed being groomed with a toothbrush that simulates a mother cat’s tongue. After another week of careful grooming, the tabby boy perked up and began moving with his newfound energy. He stuck to the treatments and continued to gain weight every day.
By about two weeks he was completing oxygen support and most treatments and medications and was a normal newborn again.
“His growth was stopped for a few days while he was very sick.” Once his body was healed, the tabby’s mission was to grow tall and strong by eating to its heart’s content. He got an insatiable appetite and became a great purring machine.
“He loves to climb in my face and rub everything over it and purr. When I’m not actively loving him, he cries for me to come back and take care of him,” Ashley told Love Meow.
Jürgen loves to be done by another cat. Ashley knew exactly the perfect boyfriend to mate with.
Just before Jürgen was brought to the rescue, another singleton named Luca came with a similar story. He was left behind by his mother cat who never returned for him. A kind person picked him up and hurried to help.
Luca, who at the time only weighed 95 grams, was determined to collect herself. He clung to the bottle like a champion and devoured the food like there was no tomorrow.
When Jürgen finally grew in size, it was time for the two to meet.
Luca immediately went to Jürgen and followed him around.
“Jürgen protested at first, but when Luca got sleepy and cuddly, Jürgen curled up next to him and they took a nap and sealed the deal! They’ve been best friends ever since,” Ashley told Love Meow.
Luca doesn’t have the best eyesight and most likely tunnel vision.
“He is very shy due to his visual impairment and Jürgen helps him to feel safe. He will follow Jürgen to explore it, but would never go alone.”
Luca likes to follow his mate’s lead when they are playing and curl up next to him when they take a nap.
“Jurgen is such an avid eater these days! He’s extremely sociable, loving, playful and always purring,” added Ashley. “Luca is very shy and every loud noise makes him scurry.”
With Jürgen at his side, Luca feels more secure and the two friends complement each other wonderfully.
“We’d like to find a home for them together because Jürgen gives Luca so much confidence and he explores by following Jürgen.”
