Curled-pawed kitten learns to walk with encouragement from the mother cat

A kitten with curved paws learned to walk with a lot of encouragement from her beloved mother cat.

About a month ago, a rescued tabby cat gave birth to a litter of five children while at a California animal shelter. One of their kittens, Dove, was born with front paws curled inward.

They were transported to Oregon Friends Of Shelter Animals where a foster family was waiting for them. “Momma Calliope and her kittens were flown to Oregon and came to my house,” said Angela, Foster’s mom, to Love Meow.

“Dove was the smallest kitten of the five, and her twisted legs made it difficult to defend herself against her siblings while they were breastfeeding.”

Angela got to work right away, making sure Dove had plenty of time with the mother cat when her siblings slept. She needed undisturbed breastfeeding because she had a lot to grow.

With the new feeding arrangement, Dove gained weight every day.

While the tabby girl was steadily gaining weight, she also received physical therapy and stretching exercises to improve her mobility. “I would apply heat and gently massage and straighten her forelegs,” said Angela Love Meow.

“Dove is super cute and loving. She sometimes curled up and fell asleep after a stretching session in my hands.”

The kitten is unapologetically determined to do everything just like its siblings. As soon as her littermates started venturing out of the nest, she insisted on following the example. Although she was a little slower on her feet, nothing could stop her.

She would move forward with her front paws and just keep going while Momma Calliope urged her on with her adorable coo and chirp.

“Mom is a very talkative cat. Sometimes she even gives little encouragement when Dove learns to walk,” Angela told Love Meow.

“She is super protective and caring and will cry when she is apart from her kittens. She will even stop while they eat to see if they are calling for her. She always makes sure that her kittens are clean, happy and are fed. “

With regular physical therapy and lots of TLC, Dove’s forelegs appear straighter and her range of motion has greatly improved.

“She can now walk, run, and play like any other kitten, and she’s in no pain at all. She may always look a little different and that’s perfectly fine! She’s a happy girl and enjoys life to the full.” Angela shared with Love Meow.

“It took Dove a little longer to learn to walk than her siblings, but as she exercised more, her muscles got stronger. She absolutely loves playing toys and hunting.”

“Dove has always been a determined kitten. She’s a fighter and won’t give up.”
