The word Catahoula means “holy lake” in the Choctaw language and was chosen as part of the breed name in honor of the dog’s place of origin, the Catahoula community in Louisiana.
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is the official state dog of Louisiana! The breed received the award in 1979.
The history of the Catahoula leopard dog is unclear. The breed may date back to the mid-18th century, with a mating of herding dogs known as the Beauceron and Native American wolfhounds.
Over the years, the Catahoula Leopard Dog has also been referred to as the Catahoula Cur, Catahoula Hog Dog, Catahoula Hound, and Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog.
Catahoula coats come in many colors including blue, various red, brown, brown, silver, black, or a combination of hues. Although the spotted variant of Catahoula fur is the best known, the breed’s coat can also be brindle or solid color.
“Catahoula” is a musical homage to the Hog Dog and contains cameos from several Catahoulas.
In 2007, the Louisiana Catahoula was named the official mascot of the Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. The first dog to hold the title was called Skeeter.
